Since 2001, English musicians Steve Tyler and Katy Marchant have enchanted audiences throughout the UK, Europe, and Scandinavia with their unique interpretation of medieval and traditional music. The duo presents an eclectic repertoire that spans centuries and borders—from melodies of the Cantigas de Santa Maria, themes from 14th-century Italy and medieval England, to their original compositions, inspired by contemporary Balfolk dances such as the waltz, mazurka, and bourrée.
Their performances combine historical authenticity and modern creativity, with room for improvisation and new arrangements that revitalize melodies from the distant past. Instrumentally, the duo stands out for the rich timbre of the bagpipes and hurdy-gurdies, but also for the use of recorders, whistles, cittern, and the organistrum—a rare reconstruction of the 12th-century instrument from the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
Recognized as one of the great virtuosos of the European accordion, Steve Tyler has a remarkable career spanning multiple artistic expressions—from theatre and multimedia to international shows. He has performed at Shakespeare’s Globe (London), collaborated with Alan Moore, Iain Sinclair, and Shirley Collins, and participated in projects with artists from such diverse backgrounds as F.M. Einheit, Jackie Oates, and John Roberts. His music, often inspired by patterns in nature, mathematics, and imagination, combines technical rigor and inexhaustible creativity.
In this performance, the duo is joined by Nuno Silva, a musician from Porto dedicated to the study and performance of ethnic string instruments of various origins. The collaboration between the three began in 2018 within the Meridianum Ensemble project and has since resulted in remarkable joint performances, including the “Medieval Music in the Dales” festival (United Kingdom, 2022).
The result is a concert that celebrates the timeless beauty of early music, uniting it with contemporary energy and expressiveness — an encounter between tradition, invention, and pure sonic inspiration.
