Plastic Bitch

Exhibition, MIRA FORUM
14 of September 2024—09 of November 2024

Self-representation in art is a recurring theme, both in painting and photography. Following in the steps of artists such as Nan Goldin, Cindy Sherman and Jo Spence, I use my body as a support and subject, the raw material for creating characters.
My photographic work consists of revisiting the self-portrait, trying to give it a personal and contemporary stamp, to awaken the conscience and (self) critical judgement of those who see it.
As I’m developing a thesis on the Mirror in Art, my series of self-portraits, which began in 2010, are both a starting point for theoretical research and a practical extension of it. Photography - portraits - are a mirror in which the beholder projects himself and sees himself.
For Francesco Casetti, the mirror can both fascinate and frighten: the viewer is horrified when he recognises himself in an image for the first time.
Irigaray doesn’t see himself in Lacan’s flat mirror, and proposes a mirror model (speculum) that reveals the interiority of the spectator. It is in this interiority/exteriority relationship that the paradox of the mirror is realised. My art rejects the passivity of the viewer, but rather encourages them to intervene.
Plastic Bitch is the mirror of the current situation - unbridled consumerism, extreme pollution, depletion of natural resources, exacerbated rubbish production - the uncomfortable mirror in which we see reflected what we, as a society, have become: plastic bitches.
